The continued increase in standards for private security in California took a major step forward on July 1, 2004, with the implementation of the Private Security Officers Training Law.
This new law gives California the most comprehensive training law for private security in the nation. In the past four years since the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001, California private security has made major upgrades to safety procedures.
All contract officers are now required to undergo a national criminal background check through the FBI database prior to receiving a security officer license, in addition to the new training law. There are nearly 400,000 private security officers in California, far exceeding the number of sworn peace officers.
